Since the inception of the CMKG, one of the highlights of each year was the Guild Seminar.  Starting in 1992 with two demonstrators, the seminar grew to having six or seven demonstrators in later years.  But, with the rising costs of hotels large enough to accommodate us plus the cost of hiring demonstrators, the expense became too great.  The core group that made up the original CMKG then turned to the internet and the group list.

Throughout our growth on the internet, we kept the officers and bylaws intact that we had as a land-based guild.  As our numbers grew and more individuals joined us from across the US and other countries, our guild realized even more that a central seminar would be impossible to do.

Our members still paid dues, the majority of which supported the newsletter.  But with more and more members able to download the newsletter from our list, the cost of production and mailing it became less and less.

The Guild Contest started out as a way to give the members something more for the dues.  The contest is open only to guild members.  The monetary prizes have been significant, and each contest has seen a published book emerge.  Some guild members, wanting to support the guild but not wanting to be a part of the contest, sent non-contest items in to be published to this book.  The books from the 2005, 2006 and 2007 contest became so popular that the guild decided to offer them to non-members of the guild as well.

Although the Guild seldom puts on a seminar, many feel we have created something perhaps just as good.  Owning a copy of the Contest book gives the member many brand-new patterns and ideas.  Since the contest includes both wearable knits and decorative knits that are made on many different types of machines from hobby plastic bed machines to the metal bed electronics, the resulting book has something for everyone's taste.

With each contest, the idea has continued to evolve and has proven to be a highlight of the CMKG year. Items are judged by criteria such as knitting techniques, overall appearance, originality, and finishing.

The contest rules are put in the list files on the forum, so all members can download them and begin planning their entries or submissions.  The contest deadline has been in the Spring in the past with the book being published in the early Summer.
